This set is a fantastic bargain for the beginning warhammer player. Two starting armies and rulebooks, plus dice, rulers and templates.
However, you can get this set direct from Games Workshop (search on line) for only $60. I have no idea why it has the price that you see here. It must be a mistake.

I`ve been buying GW products for two decades and this is the highest quality, best bargain, most comprehensive starter set ever produced for Warhammer 40,000. The miniature rule book contains all the rules from the $50 hard cover rule book minus the background section. The simple to assemble starter miniatures in this set are beautiful and look as good as the more complex multi-part plastic miniatures GW sells, but at a fraction of the price. The miniatures in this box would cost more than $300 if purchased separately as multi-part box sets. This makes them great starter miniatures for novice and younger hobbyists because they are relatively cheap and quick and easy to assemble, yet they are good looking enough to bulk out the armies of veteran hobbyists without hurting your toy soldier budget too much. Dice, templates and an introductory book are included as well.
If you`ve hesitated to get into 40K before due to the lack of a really good starter set, then the wait is over. This set will get you up and running in a cost effective manner with miniatures you`ll be happy to have for years to come. If you`re interested only in the Orks or only in the Space Marines then it`s easy to double the size of your army for the money by trading the half you don`t want with someone else who only wants the other half of the miniatures in the set.
Warhammer 40,000 is a creative and educational hobby. This hobby will nurture patience, dexterity, ability to follow printed directions, creativity, imagination and other skills utilized to assemble and paint miniatures. There is a lot of reading involved regarding all the main rules, army rules, and available background information. Playing the game with the models nurtures sportsmanship, strategic thinking, math and probability skills. I highly recommend this hobby for young and old alike. It`s also great fun for parent and child to do together.

This is definitely a great set if you`re a beginner in the world of Warhammer 40k like me. This box set gets you up and running immediately. It comes with over fifty miniatures, templates, and a comprehensive rule book! The price is close to that of just the hardcover rule book itself, so if you want to just check out the world of Warhammer 40k without investing too much, then this is where you need to start. This way you can really tell if you enjoy playing through the game and see if building an army is a hobby you really want to invest in. And trust me; it IS an investment after a while.
The ridiculously minor drawback is that you can only get this set with Space Marines and Orks as the two opposing forces. While I`m not so driven to play either of these armies, I can`t deny the usefulness in getting acquainted with the game in this set. My friends and I have been using this set in order to learn how to play the game rather than using our main forces. The small 95 page rule book has all the rules of the game; in fact they are the same exact ones you`ll find in the hardcover three hundred page book. The only difference between the two is that the hardcover book gives you a lot more background information about the different armies and some good painting tips.
One of the other major benefits to this starter kit is how easy it is to put together. The models are designed to snap fit together, which is great for beginners. I`ve put together some decently complex models, like the tanks and the Forge-World miniatures, and by comparison the “Assault on Black Reach” set is a walk in the park. It put together very simply for me and I didn`t even have to do much touch up work. There was nothing I had to seal with epoxy due to gaps and so forth. You can put together the entire force in a few hours or if you`re in a rush to play you can probably put an entire unit together in less than an hour. The only touch ups I really took time to deal with was gluing on a few arms here and there, especially with the Ork army. I found their arms were a little loose a lot of times and tended to fall off.
If you`re very interested in painting your newly built army then I actually don`t recommend you pick up the “Assault on Black Reach” paint set. It`s now out of print, but I managed to track it down. It only gives you enough paint and the colors for the Space Marine units. It doesn`t give you anything for the Ork army and it only comes with instructions on how to paint the Space Marines, so if you want to paint that really cool Terminator figure, you`re on your own. The upside is the paint set does come with five more Space Marine`s so you can increase the size of your force a little more.
If you really want to delve into the world of painting then I recommend you look into the “Battle for MacCragge” hobby set. I don`t own this product yet, but it does appear to come with enough paint for the full force in that set. The only downside is it`s Space Marines versus the Tyranids, so if you really liked the Orks and wanted to learn how to paint them the same way, then you`re out of luck for these starter sets. It works a bit more for me because I want to play as the Tyranids.
Overall I think this is a great beginner product. The only way I think they can improve it is give it more of a story oriented background and involve the new players in the universe a little more. I was kind of half expecting that based on the title of this box set. Maybe I`m too used to other forms of boxed modules. Anyway, if you want to get into this incredibly engrossing hobby, then I highly recommend this set.

The purchase of this product reminded me of those times that my dad worked with my brothers building models. I am very happy to get the chance to repeat that with my boys. Be sure to get model glue as some of the pieces need help staying in place. Add paints with your purchase so that you are ready to complete your project. The pieces are small and it is very time consuming but I have found the experience to be worth it. Remember to bring plenty of patience as it can be difficult at times.

If you are just getting started with Warhammer 40k or you`ve been with it for a while, there is no better deal to get yourself a ton of miniatures. You get all you need to play this game, rule book, small guide to collecting, game templates, and a whole mess of miniatures. It`s worth the price for the miniatures alone, but you get everything else you need to play. If you are at all interested in this game, buy this box set!

I have been a fan of role playing games for over 20 years now. This is my first venture into miniature table-top gaming. I believe the Black Reach starter set is a great way to get everything you need to get started playing in this fascinating genre. Some possible downsides are:
1) The shear amount of information provided can be daunting especially if you are the type who wants to know all of the rules before you start. I would recommend just learning the basics and play a few times before digging into the complete rule set.
2) The assembly and painting of the miniatures is time consuming (who wants to play with just gray models!?!).
3) Related to #2, there are no painting supplies provided with the starter kit so you are on your own for that.
4) No scenery elements are provided so again you are on your own for creating something interesting. I found plenty of excellent videos with a few YouTube searches.
If you are not really interested in miniature war gaming, I can see this as one of those purchases that would end up in the garage sale in a year`s time. On the other hand, if you think you might be interested this is a great way to get started if you aren`t sure what you need. If you are new to miniature wargaming, I would recommend doing a few quick searches for “warhammer battle report” on YouTube and get a sense for the type of game play involved. I would recommend the Black Reach Starter Set for anyone interested in getting started in miniature wargaming, but doesn`t really know where to start.

Warhammer 40k is a very addicting hobby wargame. Its nice to see that the basic set includes everything to start right away. Ork and Marines have to be the two most popular armies available and to have them included in one set in a fantastic idea. Including specialized units such as a dreadnought and a terminator squad only adds to experience.
By Michael J. Boulrice on November 7th, 2009 at 7:35 pm:
I bought this set because I was getting into warhammer 40k and because I needed more units for my Space marine army. I was worried that the construction would be sub-par but that wasnt the case. While you cant pose them in the variety of positions as the more expensive sets they are already posed in a variety of standard positions and the detail of the models are preserved. As summarized in the title this is a steal at the price because an equivalent army would cost an upwards of 150 dallors retail. If your considering this for a child I would recommend it for someone over the age of 10 because of the skill required to assemble the pieces properly(clippers, pocket knife or exacto-knife, and sand paper, and paint, recommended though not required) and learn the rules of the game which are still complex for a 20 year old such as I. If you do get this set for your child make sure he has someone to play with or have time yourself to invest in learning the game and perhaps help make and paint the models. So for veterans of the game looking for more models to add to their army or beginners looking to enjoy a new game this set satisfies all.

By D. Williams III on January 15th, 2010 at 3:57 am:
I bought this set as a way of showing a friend the hobby. The set is a perfect way of displaying the game system, as well as showcasing two of the bigger armies for the game. As a whole, the background for the game is a very rich, and expansive universe, but this starter set is an excellent way to ease someone into the war game miniature hobby.
There are a lot of sites on the internet explaining how to play the game, but in essence what you are buying are plastic toy soldiers. These toy soldiers need to be assembled with hobby glue, and then they are ready to play the game. The game itself uses a turn based system, where each player has a turn to move, shoot, and attack with his army. This is all controlled by using a tape measure and dice to determine the outcome. The rules can be a little complex at places, but the game system is set up to allow players to play at a level they are comfortable with, and incorporate more complex rules as they see fit.
Yes, the miniature war gaming hobby can be a little expensive. To get the most out of your toy soldiers, you will want to invest in some hobby tools such as clippers, as well as paints and brushes. The internet is full of websites showcasing the miniatures, and how to get the most out of them. The value in my opinion, exceeds the cost of the product, when you have a fully painted army that you created from gray plastic, ready to do battle against a friend`s army.
In the end, it must be reiterated that Warhammer 40k is a hobby. It is not simply a video game that will be replaced when a new one comes out. If you are interested in giving Warhammer a shot, then I highly recommend this set as a way to try it out.

I purchased The Assault on Black Reach primarily for the rulebook, dice and templates that accompanied it- I figured I could pay $50 for the standalone rulebook, or $60 for the rulebook, dice, templates, and some additional models for my Spare Marine army. I also purchased a Black Templars Chapter Upgrade sprue set, with the intention of interchanging those parts with the parts in the Assault on Black Reach set.
When I opened the box, I was slightly disappointed. These models were not designed to be assembled in the way that most Games Workshop models are. There are no options for customization within the box, and the difference in assembly makes it nearly impossible to customize with other pieces. Were I building a Codex Space Marine army, such as the Ultramarines (the featured chapter on the box) this set would be just fine, and the lack of customization would not be particularly upsetting. However, the Black Templars are decidedly non-codex in their equipment and organization, and I was forced to make some rather interesting conversions.
Now, on the other hand, I recognize the accessibility that this box set provides as starter kit. It provides 2 non-customizable forces with set points values, evenly matched against each other, and it provides all the information and accessories you need to begin fighting with those forces. The models were mostly very simple to assemble, though the glue-less assembly does not work quite as well as advertised.
In summary- if you are building a non-codex army, and looking for a supplement to your forces and/or a new rulebook, I would suggest buying the parts individually. However, if you are new to Warhammer 40,000, I have not encountered a more comprehensive and informative starter set. This is definitely the set for you.

For those looking to get into Warhammer 40k, this product is the way to go. While the instruction booklets don`t really give you the whole feel of playing the game, the models included are well worth the money, since similar models priced individually would cost at least twice as much. Be aware before buying this kit that it is not all inclusive, though. While you can play a small game right out of the box, tournament minded players will want to bulk up their army. The unpainted models need to be put together and painted, which is a great way to make your army your own. A great value for the price and a great way to start playing Warhammer 40k.
By T. Atkins on September 13th, 2010 at 7:46 am:
I bought this box set for my 11 year old son due to his love of the companion computer game, “Dawn of War”. We discussed it in length before buying something that has so much effort and time involved to make it worthwhile. It was a good move.
The set comes with two armies you must assemble and painstakingly paint (if you want the full effect). My son spent the first month building each piece and painting them as best he could. With a little “Testors” paint and a few fine brushes, its not too difficult to get a good result, with each piece taking about an hour to complete. It was a great lesson in patience and he values the effort put in each one, as it is really the first thing he has taken good care of we have bought him.
As a dad, i wanted to give him an opportunity to experience the “full effect”; which means a small battlefield for his pieces to play on. Reading up on the back-story of the “Black Reach” i created a small, 8 square foot gaming table on a piece of hard-board using Styrofoam, tubing, wood and a lot of sand and paint. It was a good bonding exercise for the both of us and I fount it to be a lot of fun. It isn`t totally necessary to spend a fortune, $60 in materials can go a very long way if you are a DIY type.
So, after a month of construction and the joys that comes along with it, we were up and running with two armies. The game has fairly detailed rules, but its orderly and everyone goes in turn. A roll of the dice keeps the pace moving well and it took about 3 hours for our first go at it. I mopped the floor with him, and he cried.. Ok.. i`m kidding about that part. It was actually really fun for both he and I. In the end, it is an entertaining and imaginative game that he now has his friends firmly into and they are all really mature about it. His friends are now building their own armies and they all take it fairly seriously, as the kids pile around the game table instead of the video games or tv.
The creativity is amazing and the strategy to “get it right” keeps the boys (and me) really thinking the whole time. This is a perfect set to start things off right, has everything you need out of the box (except that game board, but you can even use a kitchen table!). I whole-heartedly recommend this set to anyone that wants to begin playing or wants to teach their interested “tweens or teens” some valuable lessons.
